Straw played baseball for St. Johns River State College after graduating from Braden River High School in Bradenton, Florida.

Straw was selected in the 12th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros. He had intended to transfer to the University of South Alabama, but instead chose to sign with the Astros.

Straw made his professional debut with the Greeneville Astros, hitting.268 in 58 games with 22 stolen bases.

In 87 games with the Quad Cities River Bandits and Lancaster JetHawks in 2016, he hit.358/.423/.454 with one home run, 27 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, and in 127 games with the Buies Creek Astros and Corpus Christi Hooks in 2017, he hit.290 with one home run, 44 RBIs, and 38 stolen bases.

Straw began the season with Corpus Christi and was later promoted to the Fresno Grizzlies.

On September 15, 2018, Straw got promoted to the big leagues. Jake Marisnick bunted him in with his first professional run on September 21, 2018. J.D Davis used him as a pinch runner.

Straw’s first professional theft came the next day. Straw hit his first Major League home run on September 29, 2018, against Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Yefry Ramrez.
