Nate Pearson did not begin the 2020 season on the 30-man roster, he was added in time for the 6th game of the season, which was scheduled to begin on July 29th against the Washington Nationals.
Even though it took place at Nationals Park, it was the Blue Jays’ home opener.
He was matched up against Nationals star Max Scherzer, but matched him pitch for pitch, tossing five shutout innings and striking out Carter Kieboom to close the fourth inning.
In this first taste of the Show, he was everything the Blue Jays had been anticipating. His following three starts, however, were not as successful, as he surrendered a total of 15 runs and was placed on the disabled list.
On September 25th, he made his major league comeback, pitching one bullpen appearance and earning his first big league win against the Baltimore Orioles.
He pitched well enough to earn a spot on the team’s playoff roster. He pitched two innings in relief in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against the Tampa Bay Rays after ace Hyun-Jin Ryu was removed early.
He was outstanding, retiring all six batters he faced, five of them on strikeouts. He went 1-0 with a 6.50 ERA in 18 innings pitched this season.
