Nick Castellanos Contract

The Philadelphia Phillies signed Nick Castellanos to a 5-year, $100,000,000 contract, with $100,000,000 guaranteed.

On Tuesday, Nick Castellanos and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract.

After the Phillies signed slugger Kyle Schwarber, the All-Star outfielder agreed to the agreement last week. On Wednesday, he’ll be unveiled at the team’s spring training facilities.

Last season, Castellanos batted .309 with 34 home runs, 100 RBIs, and a .939 OPS for the Cincinnati Reds, earning him a spot on the All-Star team and the Silver Slugger Award.

In nine big league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, and Reds, he hit .278 with 168 home runs, 594 RBIs, and a .814 OPS.

In the center of a Phillies lineup that also includes All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, Castellanos joins reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper. He’s expected to share time in left field with Schwarber and act as the designated hitter.

The Phillies accomplished 82-80 last season, their first winning season since 2011, but their postseason skid now stretches to an NL-worst ten years.

Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ President of Baseball Operations, was president and general manager of the Tigers when they picked Castellanos in 2010, and he made his debut with Detroit in 2013.

Castellanos opted out of the final two years of his deal with Cincinnati, which would have earned him $34 million, in November.

The Reds made him a qualifying offer of $18.4 million, which he declined, so Cincinnati will receive a draft selection this year as compensation for Castellanos departing as a free agency.
