Nicolaus Tanner Mears (born October 7, 1996) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2020, he made his MLB debut.



Mears went to Rocklin High School and Sacramento City College for his college baseball career. In 2018, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates.



In his first complete professional season, Mears reached the Double-A Altoona Curve, however, he spent the majority of the year with the High-A Bradenton Marauders. Mears tossed 46.2 innings across three levels in 2019, striking out 69 batters while walking only 18, while keeping a 3.28 ERA despite pitching solely out of the bullpen.

Mears was promoted to the majors for the first time on August 8, 2020, and made his major league debut that night against the Detroit Tigers, pitching one inning and conceding one run. That season, Mears made four appearances with the Pirates, pitching five innings and allowing three runs.

Mears started the 2021 season in the Alternate Training Site before joining the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians in May. He was originally called up to the Pirates on May 26, but he didn’t play until his fourth stint with the major league club, which began on July 20.
