Senzel was widely regarded as the safest pick in the draft by many baseball officials and scouts. Because of his ability to hit gap-to-gap with power, he was also rated as the top hitter in the draft.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Senzel with the second overall pick after the Philadelphia Phillies selected Mickey Moniak with the first overall pick.

Senzel signed with the Reds on June 13, 2016, and received a $6.2 million signing bonus.

Senzel made his professional debut in the Rookie-level Pioneer League with the Billings Mustangs, where he batted .152 with one double. He was promoted to the Dayton Dragons of the American Hockey League.

For Dayton, he batted.329 with seven homers.

Senzel began the 2017 season with the Daytona Tortugas of the Florida State League’s Class A-Advanced division before being promoted to the Class AA Southern League’s Pensacola Blue Wahoos in June.

In 119 games between Daytona and Pensacola, he had a combined.321 batting average, 14 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a.905 OPS.

Senzel began the 2018 season with the Class AAA International League’s Louisville Bats. Senzel’s 2018 season was cut short because he needed surgery to repair a ruptured ligament in his right index finger on June 23, 2018.

Senzel informed new Reds manager David Bell upon his return from injury that he was planning on playing center field.
