Before Nik Needham could become a restricted free agent, the Miami Dolphins took a significant measure to ensure that he would remain a member of their secondary by extending a second-round tender offer to him.
This move was made before Needham was eligible to become a free agent.
On Monday, the very last and most important stage was completed when Needham signed his tender, which would pay him $3.98 million for the year 2022.
Up to the 22nd of April, any team was able to sign Needham to an offer sheet; however, the Dolphins guaranteed themselves the right of first refusal or a second-round selection as compensation in the event that they declined to match.
If the Dolphins do not sign Needham to a new deal before the end of the season, he will be a free agent with no restrictions on where he can play the following season.
The signing of Needham comes just three days after the Dolphins locked up the most important component of their secondary by reaching an extension with Xavien Howard, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times.
Although the Dolphins eventually re-signed wide receiver Preston Williams, linebacker Sam Eguavoen, and safety Sheldrick Redwine, running back Patrick Laird and defensive back Jamal Perry are still free agents.
Needham was the only one of six restricted free agents that the Dolphins tendered before the start of free agency.
