He was signed as an international free agent by the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball in 2008, and he began playing in the Dominican Summer League the following year.

Herrera rose through the Rangers’ farm system over the next few seasons, earning back-to-back Texas League Midseason All-Star accolades in 2013 and 2014.

Herrera was taken by the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft in December 2014.

He had spent the majority of his career at second base at the time, but the Phillies were intrigued by his potential as an outfielder, and he was named to the opening day roster in 2015.

Herrera had a great offensive performance in his first three seasons with the Phillies, including an All-Star selection in 2016, but he frequently fought with manager Pete Mackanin over base running.

In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Mackanin benched Herrera in the middle of games for a perceived lack of hustle and for ignoring coaches’ signals on the basepath.

Herrera was arrested in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on May 27, 2019 for a domestic violence incident. The charges were eventually dropped, but he was suspended for the rest of the season by MLB.

Prior to the 2020 season, Herrera was designated for assignment, and the COVID-19 epidemic prohibited him from participating in Minor League Baseball that year.

He was out of baseball for over two years before being re-signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2021.
