Cruz made his professional debut in 2016, hitting .294 with 23 RBIs in 55 games with the DSL Dodgers 1. With the Great Lakes Loons, he began the 2017 season.



The Dodgers traded Cruz and Angel German to the Pirates on July 31, 2017, in exchange for Tony Watson. After that, he was posted to the West Virginia Power Company.

He hit .237/.297/.350 with ten home runs and 44 RBIs in 105 games between the two teams.

He hit .286 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs in 103 games for the West Virginia Black Bears in 2018, garnering South Atlantic League All-Star honors.

Cruz opened 2019 with a .298 batting average in Class A-Advanced. In three games, there have been no home runs.

Then he was moved to the Bradenton Marauders, where he hit 7 home runs in 35 games while batting .301 with an OBP of .345.

Then, on July 30, he was promoted to Double-A Altoona Curve with a 1 home run, .269 batting average, and .346 OBP percent in 35 games. He was out for two months during the season due to a fractured foot.

Following the 2019 season, Cruz was added to the Pirates’ 40–man roster. He did not play in 2020 since the Minor League Baseball season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
