Oscar Mauricio Mercado is a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Cleveland Guardians. He is Colombian-American. At the 2017 World Baseball Classic, he was a member of the Colombian national baseball team.
Mercado was born in the Colombian city of Cartagena. Oscar Sr. was a soccer player who also worked as a general contractor.
Juan, his older brother, and Nathalia, his twin sister, are his siblings. When he was seven years old, his family immigrated to the United States on his father’s work visa and resided in Tampa, Florida.

He made the conversion from shortstop to outfielder for the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2016.
