Oscar Mauricio Mercado, a Colombian-American professional baseball outfielder for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball, was born on December 16, 1994.

At the 2017 World Baseball Classic, he was a member of the Colombian national baseball team. Mercado was born in the Colombian city of Cartagena. Oscar Sr., the man who raised him, was an avid soccer player who also worked as a general contractor.

Juan, his older brother, and Nathalia, his identical twin sister, are his siblings. When he was seven years old, his family relocated to Tampa, Florida, after immigrating to the United States in order to take advantage of his father’s work visa.

Mercado received their secondary education at the Gaither High School located in Tampa, Florida. He made a verbal commitment to play baseball for the collegiate team at Florida State University.

Mercado was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, making him the 58th overall selection.

During the seasons of 2014 and 2015, he was a member of the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League and the Peoria Chiefs of the Class A Midwest League.

In 2016, he made the transition from shortstop to outfielder as a position player. After the AFL season, the Cardinals decided to add him to their 40-man roster in order to shield him from the Rule 5 Draft.
