Paolo Alesandro Espino Alonso is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Washington Nationals from Panama. On January 10, 1987, he was born. He formerly played for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball.
Espino attended Bradenton’s The Pendleton School. In the tenth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, he was chosen by the Cleveland Indians. Espino made his professional debut in 2007 with the Single-A Lake County Captains.
Espino signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on January 15, 2019. To begin the 2019 season, he was sent to the AAA Fresno Grizzlies, where he remained the whole year. He was invited to Spring Training with the Nationals in 2020 and was added to their original 60-man roster.
Espino was added to the 40-man and active rosters on September 21, 2020. Espino pitched in two games for the Nationals in 2020, surrendering three earned runs in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts. On October 9, 2020, Espino was outrighted to the lower leagues and opted to free agency the following day.
On November 2, 2020, Espino re-signed with the Nationals on a minor league deal. Espino was added to the active roster on April 18, 2021, after Stephen Strasburg was placed on the disabled list.
Espino won his first big league game on June 16, 2021, tossing five scoreless innings in a 3–1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He earned his first big league saves on June 23, 2021, when he pitched a spotless bottom of the ninth inning in a 13–12 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
