Sewald signed with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League and made his professional debut that same season, going 0–2 with a 1.88 ERA in 28.2 relief innings pitched.

In 35 bullpen appearances with the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2013, he has a 3–2 record and a 1.77 ERA.

Sewald signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on January 7, 2021. Sewald was added to the active roster on May 13, 2021. With the Mariners, Sewald had a breakout season, thanks in large part to his better pitch usage.

In an interview with the station, Sewald revealed that he had beyond even his own hopes. In 2021, Sewald went 10–3 with a 3.06 ERA in 62 games and 64.2 innings pitched, striking out 104 batters.
