Murfee went to Montgomery Bell Academy, which is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Murfree went to Vanderbilt University after being undrafted out of high school in 2013.

Murfee redshirted his freshman season and went on to play three seasons of collegiate baseball for the Commodores. Murfee spent his first two seasons at Vanderbilt as a shortstop before switching to throwing for his senior year. Murfee redshirted his final year at Santa Clara University.



The Seattle Mariners selected Murfee in the 33rd round (988th overall) in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.

He pitched 33 innings for the Everett AquaSox in 2018, finishing 3–2 with a 6.55 ERA. In 2019, he pitched for the Modesto Nuts, the Arkansas Travelers, and the Tacoma Rainiers, finishing 6–5 with a 3.57 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 113+13 innings. Murfee was awarded the Mariners’ minor league “60 ft., 6-in Club” Award for 2019.

After the season, he played for the Arizona Fall League’s Peoria Javelinas. He was also named for the US national baseball team for the 2019 WBSC Premier 12 on October 10, 2019.
