Phidarian “Phil” Mathis is an American football defensive tackle who currently plays for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League.

Mathis was born on April 26, 1998. He attended Alabama’s college football program and then went on to be selected by the Commanders in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2022.

Mathis was born on April 26th, 1998 in the town of Wisner, located in the state of Louisiana. He began his secondary education in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, at Franklin Parish High School,

but after his sophomore year, he relocated to Monroe, Louisiana, where he started attending Neville High School. He finished his senior year with a total of 41 tackles and seven sacks.

Mathis was a four-star recruit and chose to play college football in Alabama over offers from LSU and TCU. Mathis decision was based on Alabama’s reputation.

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders selected Mathis in the second round (47th overall), making him their overall selection.

During his first year as a true freshman at Alabama, Mathis received a redshirt and was later selected to the All-Freshman team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The Crimson Tide won the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship thanks in large part to his performance on defence, which included 31 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Mathis tore a meniscus in his left knee during his first game in the NFL and was subsequently placed on injured reserve.
