He converted from infielder to catcher early in his minor league career, impressing scouts and coaches with his defensive prowess.

Despite never having played in the minor leagues above Class A-Advanced, he was invited to major league spring training in 2020 and made his major league debut in September 2020, hitting his first professional home run on September 18.

Before the start of the 2021 season, he was back in the minors and ranked among the top five prospects in the Phillies’ farm system as of 2020.

His early role model was Venezuelan shortstop Omar Vizquel. He grew up playing baseball, particularly as a shortstop, a popular position among Venezuelan teenagers wanting to get into professional baseball.

A couple of baseball scouts encouraged him to attempt catching shortly before his 16th birthday, believing that doing so would improve his prospects of being drafted by an MLB team.

During the summer of 2015, he made his catching debut in Mexico at an under-15 baseball competition, which drew the attention of several foreign MLB scouts.

Marchan was eventually signed as an international free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball in July 2015 for a $200,000 signing bonus.

Marchan spent 2016 with the Dominican Summer League (DSL) Phillies, primarily catching but with some appearances at first base, after spending the conclusion of the 2015 baseball season practicing catching in the Florida Instructional League.

He hit .333 in 44 games for the DSL Phillies, with 34 runs batted in (RBI) in 171 at bats. In only 30 games and 84 at bats with the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Phillies the following year, he batted.238 with 10 RBI.
