New York Yankees acquired Sanmartin as part of a deal for Ronald Herrera. Sanmartin played for the Staten Island Yankees, Charleston RiverDogs, Tampa Tarpons, and Trenton Thunder during the 2018 season.

A total of 67 13 innings of work at four different levels of the minors saw him go 5–7, 2.81 ERA, and strike out 58. The Cincinnati Reds acquired Sanmartin and Sonny Gray in exchange for Shed Long Jr. and compensation draft picks.

Both Sanmartin and Sonny Gray were sent to the Cincinnati Reds as part of the deal that sent Shed Long Jr. and draft pick compensation to the Chicago Cubs.
