Sanmartin pitched for the Dominican Summer League’s DSL Rangers in 2016 and 2017, going 0–1 with a 5.23 ERA over 10+13 innings in 2016, and 7–1 with a 2.35 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 61+13 innings in 2017.



He went 7–2 with a 2.45 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 66 innings for the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short Season Northwest League and the Hickory Crawdads of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2017.

Sanmartin was traded to the New York Yankees for Ronald Herrera on November 20, 2017.

Sanmartin played for the Staten Island Yankees, Charleston RiverDogs, Tampa Tarpons, and Trenton Thunder during the 2018 season.
