For the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, Rico Dowdle plays running back professionally under the full name Rico Sharod Dowdle Jr. At 1.80 m, he is 98 kg in weight. At A.C. Reynolds High School, where he studied and played football, he racked up 2,545 yards on 247 carries and 51 rushing scores. A 55-yard touchdown reception was added to his 1,434 yards of passing, 11 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.

In addition to being named Parade All-American and All-state, his 63 total touchdowns set a WNC single-season record. He was also named All-WNC Player of the Year. He chose to play collegiate football with the South Carolina Gamecocks at the University of South Carolina after graduating from high school.

He missed the first four games as a freshman after having surgery to treat a sports hernia in the offseason. Despite being hampered by a groin injury in the offseason, he finished second on the team with 108 carries for 498 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns as a senior. His 39 games of rushing for 2,167 yards and 16 touchdowns allowed him to rank 15th all-time at the school.
