Riley Chun-Young O’Brien is a Seattle Mariners pitcher. He was a member of the Reds and the Mariners in Major League Baseball. In 2021, he debuted in Major League Baseball (MLB).

O’Brien was a baseball player for Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Washington. After graduating in 2013, he went to Everett Community College. He transferred to the College of Idaho after two seasons at Everett.

He finished 6–3 with a 3.23 ERA with sixty strikeouts in 69 innings as a junior in 2016. In his senior year, he had a 3–4 record with a 2.15 ERA in 67 innings pitched.

After the season, he was drafted in the eighth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays traded O’Brien to the Cincinnati Reds for Cody Reed on August 28, 2020. [ O’Brien was added to the 40-man roster on November 20, 2020.

He was assigned to the Louisville Bats of the Triple-A East to begin the 2021 season. Over 112+23 innings, O’Brien pitched to a 7-7 record, a 4.55 ERA, and 121 strikeouts in 23 games (22 starts).

The Reds added O’Brien to the active roster on September 28, 2021, and he will make his MLB debut against the Chicago White Sox.

He was the starting pitcher and went 13 innings, allowing two solo home runs, three walks, and two strikeouts.

The Reds designated O’Brien for assignment on April 13, 2022 to make place for Nick Lodolo.  The Reds traded O’Brien to the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations or a player to be designated later on April 16, 2022.
