Grossman was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 after attending high school in Texas.

Grossman was born in San Diego, California, but grew up in Cypress, Texas, where he attended Cy-Fair High School and played varsity baseball for four years from 2005 to 2008.

As a freshman, he was named to the all-district first team. The squad won the 5A state baseball championship in his junior year.

“He was a joy to teach because he put in a lot of effort at practice and appeared to be having a great time playing the game.

As a coaching staff, we recognized early on that he was a terrific player “John Pope, a former high school coach, expressed his thoughts.

Grossman was a prospective first-round pick in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, but he was passed over owing to his commitment to attend the University of Texas.

Grossman was taken in the sixth round of the draft by the Pirates, and he was signed for an above-slot $1 million signing bonus.

Grossman was a member of the Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League’s Class A-Advanced in 2010.

Grossman became the first minor league player since Nick Swisher in 2004 to score 100 runs and walk 100 times in a season in 2011, and the first player in the FSL to accomplish so since 1998 while playing for the Marauders.

For the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was voted Minor League Player of the Year.

Grossman signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on January 5, 2021.

Grossman hit his first career walk-off home run against Justin Wilson on May 28 to help the Tigers beat the New York Yankees 3–2 in extra innings.

Grossman earned a career-high 98 walks (fourth in the AL) and a solid.357 on-base percentage while hitting.239 in 2021.

He also had career highs in at-bats (557), home runs (23), RBI (67), and stolen bases (seven) (20). He became the seventh player in Tigers history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season.
