In mid-July, he was optioned to the Altoona Curve but was recalled shortly after the Pirates traded Adam Frazier, with Castro filling in at second base for Frazier.

Castro hit two home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 28, 2021.

These were his fourth and fifth big league home runs, as well as his fourth and fifth major league hits, making him the first major league player to hit all five home runs since at least 1901.
