Roenis Elias

Roenis Elas is a professional baseball pitcher from Cuba who now pitches for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball.

In 2014, he made his MLB debut. He formerly played for the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals in Major League Baseball.

Elas pitched in the Cuban National Series for Guantánamo for two seasons. He pitched 31 innings in 18 games (one start) in 2008–09, posting a 2–3 record and a 7.84 earned run average (ERA).

In the 2009–10 season, he pitched 63 innings in 21 games for a 7.14 ERA and a 5–7 record (17 starts).

 

In 2010, Elas left Cuba in the hopes of signing a contract with a Major League Baseball team. From Cuba to Cancun, Mexico, he traveled by boat for 30 hours.

He began his career with the Sultanes de Monterrey’s “B” team in the Mexican League.

On May 3, 2011, Elas signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners.

He pitched for the Rookie League Pulaski Mariners and Arizona League Mariners, as well as the Single-A Clinton LumberKings, in his first minor league season. Over 48+13 innings pitched, he was 5–2 with a 4.28 ERA with 41 strikeouts.

 

He was a member of the Class A-Advanced High Desert Mavericks in 2012. He started 26 games and went 11–6 with a 3.76 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 148+3 innings pitched.

He spent the 2013 season with the Jackson Generals of the Double-A level. Over 130 innings, he started 22 games, went 6–11, and struck out 121 batters.
