Bolanos has always had a live arm and a lot of potentials, especially in scouts’ eyes. In their most recent scouting report, MLB Pipeline had this to say about Bolanos:

Bolanos has improved his secondary pitches, particularly his breaking pitches, as well. Both are high-spin options, with the slider biting hard in the mid-to-high 80s and the curve dropping but still hitting 80 mph.

He employed both to considerable success during his brief tenure in the major leagues.

Bolanos’ curveball had a spin rate of 72nd percentile in 2019, which was rather impressive. According to Baseball Savant, his curveball was one of his finest pitches overall in 2019.

With the Padres, Bolanos threw his curve ball 20.5 percent of the time, with a wOBA of.236, an xwOBA of.191, and a whiff rate of 55.2 percent, all remarkable numbers.

Bolanos also displayed outstanding command of the pitch in the bottom part of the strike zone, as seen by his heatmap from 2019.

The considerable differential in velocity from his four-seam fastball was what made the pitch so effective in 2019. Bolanos’ FF averaged 94.3 MPH in 2019, placing him in the 70th percentile.

What’s with the curve? It averaged 76.4 mph, a difference of approximately 18 mph. While the curveball proved to be an important pitch in Bolanos’ arsenal, his FF didn’t prove to be nearly as effective in 2019.

As shown in the GIF below, Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo didn’t pick it up properly, and thus whiffed badly as a result:
