Prior to being suspended from the 2019 Peach Bowl due to a failing drug test, he started each of his 13 games during his sophomore season. At the end of the season, he had a total of 38 tackles and six sacks. The suspension lasted through his junior year in 2020, five games into the season.

In the 2021 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Perkins in the third round, giving them the 96th overall pick.

Perkins signed a rookie deal with New England on July 20, 2021, which was for a total of four years. He was put on injured reserve on December 17 after sitting out the first 13 games of the season. Perkins was then placed on injured reserve on August 23, 2022.
