Ryan William Bates is an American football guard who plays professionally for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. He is 1.93 m tall and weighs 137 kg. He was born in Warminster Township, Pennsylvania, on February 14, 1997, to Theresa Strocen-Bates and Norman Bates. While attending Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster Township, Pennsylvania, he participated in football for the team.
He played collegiate football for the Penn State Nittany Lions team at Pennsylvania State University. He signed on as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in May 2019. Bates was exchanged by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Buffalo Bills on August 9, 2019.
In Week 16 of the 2021 season, he started his first game at right guard before switching to left guard for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. In March 2022, the Bills tenderized Bates as a restricted free agent. On March 24, 2022, the Chicago Bears signed Bates to an offer sheet, but the Buffalo Bills responded. In April 2022, the Bills agreed to a four-year, $17 million deal with Bates.
