Ryan was born on September 2, 1996, in Orlando, Florida in the United States of America. He had his non-professional baseball career at Walsh Jesuit High School located in Cuyahoga Falls in Ohio. During his senior year in high school in 2015, he was named the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for Ohio and was also named The Plain Dealer Baseball Pitcher of the Year.
After high school, he enrolled at Ohio State University where he played college baseball. He played collegiate summer baseball in 2016 with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League. During the 2018 MLB draft, he was drafted out of college by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round of the draft.
He signed with them and began his professional career with the Grand Junction Rockies. In 2019, he played for the Asheville Tourists. The Rockies promoted him to the major leagues on September 5, 2021, and he made his MLB debut that day for the Rockies.
