While a student at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, Ryan participated in baseball. He attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and played baseball for the team after graduating from high school because he was not selected for the draft. He was a Wilmington Sharks player in the Coastal Plain League.

Additionally, he participated in baseball for the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s Upper Valley Nighthawks, where he was named an All-Star. In the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft, the Minnesota Twins selected him out of college. Before being promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels during the season, he signed with the Twins and started his professional career that year with the Elizabethton Twins.

He was assigned to the Fort Myers Miracle during the 2019 minor league season, where he was selected a Florida State League All-Star, before being promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. In August 2020, the Twins promoted him to the major leagues and put him on their active roster. He made his MLB debut on August 20, 2020.
