From 2014 to 2019, Clay pitched in the Twins’ minor league system. He was a non-roster invitee to Minnesota’s 60-man player pool in 2020, working out at CHS Field in St. Paul’s alternate training location.

 

Clay was never signed to a major – roster by the Twins, and after the 2020 season, he became a minor league free agency.

Clay was signed to a major league contract by the Washington Nationals on November 18, 2020, making him a member of a major league squad for the first time in his career.

Clay was promoted to the major leagues for the first time on April 6, 2021. The next day, he made his MLB debut against the Atlanta Braves, pitching a shutout inning.
