Clay was signed to a major league contract by the Washington Nationals on November 18, 2020, making him a member of a major league squad for the first time in his career.

Clay was promoted to the major leagues for the first time on April 6, 2021. The next day, he made his MLB debut against the Atlanta Braves, pitching a shutout inning.
