Sam James Howard is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Previously, he was a member of the Colorado Rockies.



Cartersville High School in Cartersville, Georgia was Howard’s alma mater. The Chicago Cubs selected Howard in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB draft out of high school.

He did not sign with Chicago and instead enrolled at Georgia Southern University, where he was a member of the Georgia Southern Eagles baseball team.



He played collegiate summer baseball for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Harwich Mariners in 2013.

Howard was taken in the third round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies, with the 82nd overall pick. He received a $672,100 signing bonus when he joined the Rockies.

Howard debuted with the Pioneer League’s Rookie-level Grand Junction Rockies, where he spent the whole 2014 season, going 1–3 with a 5.40 ERA in 14 games.

He was 11–9 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 2015 with the Asheville Tourists of the Class A South Atlantic League.

Howard started the 2016 season with the Class A-Advanced California League’s Modesto Nuts before being promoted to the Class AA Eastern League’s Hartford Yard Goats midway through the season.

The Rockies welcomed Howard to spring training in 2017.

He returned to Hartford to start 2017, and after compiling a 2.33 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 46.1 innings, he was promoted to the Class AAA Albuquerque Isotopes, where he concluded the season with a 4–4 record and a 3.89 ERA.

After the season, the Rockies added him to their 40-man roster.
