The Chicago Cubs selected Sam Howard in the 48th round of the 2011 draft, but he chose to finish his undergraduate career at Georgia Southern.

Howard’s gamble paid off, as he was selected in the third round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies.

Howard’s progress to the Majors would be slow, with a 3.85 ERA, 8.0 K/9, and 2.8 BB/9 through six minor league seasons.

Despite the fact that Howard’s poorest season in the minors occurred with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate, he would be promoted and forfeit his rookie eligibility in 2019.

With the Rockies for two brief appearances, he threw 23 innings and had a 5.87 ERA. The Rockies were able to justify DFAing Howard because of this.

On October 30, 2019, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Sam Howard off waivers. Howard continued to impress the coaches throughout camp and was promoted to the Big League club on August 2nd.

Howard made an immediate impact, tossing four scoreless innings in his first three appearances while the rest of the bullpen struggled.

Howard had appeared in 16 games, threw 16 innings, and allowed four earned runs as of September 14th, giving him a 2.25 ERA. These are obviously excellent figures, but 16 innings is a small sample size.
