Sheldon Rankins is a defensive tackle who competes in professional American football for the National Football League’s New York Jets. He is 138 kg and 1.88 m tall. He went to Covington Eastside High School in Georgia. He made a commitment to play college football at Louisville University. From 2012 through 2015, he participated in collegiate football competitions for the University of Louisville’s Louisville Cardinals football team.
During his freshmen and sophomore seasons, he largely served as a backup, compiling 22 tackles and four sacks. Rankins started all 13 of his games as a junior in 2014 and finished with 53 tackles, eight sacks, and two interceptions. He recorded 58 tackles, six sacks, and a fumble return score in 2015 as a senior.
Rankins was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft on April 28, 2016, with the 12th overall pick. He was given a four-year, $12.8 million deal by the Saints on May 9, 2016. The Saints exercised the fifth-year option on Rankins’ contract in April 2019.
With an ankle injury, he was put on injured reserve on December 11, 2019. Through 10 games, he recorded 10 tackles and 2 sacks for the season. He had a knee injury and was put on injured reserve in November 2020. He becomes operational in December 2020. He agreed to a two-year, $17 million contract with the New York Jets in March 2021.
