Solomon Christopher Thomas, a defensive tackle with the National Football League’s New York Jets, was born on August 26, 1995. The San Francisco 49ers selected him third overall in the 2017 NFL Draft after he played college football for Stanford University.
Thomas was anticipated by the majority of experts and scouts to be selected in the first round after graduating from Stanford. He was given the chance to attend the NFL Scouting Combine, but he only decided to take part in the bench press, 40-yard dash, vertical jump, and broad jump.
Thomas participated in Stanford’s pro day on March 23, 2017, but chose to stand on his combine numbers and limit himself to positional drills. According to NFLDraftScout.com, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN, he was the second-best defensive end.
In the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Thomas third overall.
He joined Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner as the third defensive end the 49ers have selected in the first round in a row.
John Lynch, the newly appointed 49ers general manager, advised Thomas to leave Stanford without knowing he would be in a position to draft him the following season as a member of the 49ers front office. Lynch and Thomas had coincidentally studied together as mature students while Lynch worked as a FOX Sports broadcaster.
Thomas signed a four-year, $28.14 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers on July 28, 2017, which came with an $18.61 million signing bonus and was fully guaranteed. As a rookie, he made 12 starts in 14 games while compiling 41 tackles and three sacks.
Thomas became a free agent in 2021 after the 49ers decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on his contract on May 1, 2020. Thomas tore his ACL during the 49ers’ Week 2 game against the New York Jets and was out for the remainder of the campaign.
On March 19, 2021, Thomas and the Las Vegas Raiders agreed to a one-year contract. He took part in all 17 contests and finished with 34 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Thomas committed to the New York Jets on March 30, 2022.
