Spencer Enochs Torkelson is a first baseman and third baseman in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers selected Torkelson first overall in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft.

Torkelson played baseball, football, and basketball at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, California. He batted .430 in high school baseball, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 99 runs (RBIs).



He has signed a letter of intent to play college baseball with the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Torkelson hit .320/.440/.743 with 25 home runs and 53 RBIs in 55 games as a freshman at Arizona State.

The 25 home runs led the country, beat Barry Bonds’ school record for home runs by a freshman, and set a Pac-12 Conference record for home runs by a freshman.

He was named Freshman of the Year by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, National Freshman Hitter of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year by the Pac-12 Conference.

He went on to play for the US collegiate national team after the season. Torkelson joined Bob Horner as the only player at Arizona State to hit 20 home runs in consecutive seasons as a sophomore.

Torkelson was named the No. 1 college prospect in the 2020 draft by Baseball America in 2019.

He played collegiate summer baseball for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League following the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Torkelson hit six home runs as a junior in a COVID-19 shortened season, giving him 53 for his ASU career, three less than the school record.
