Spencer Enochs Torkelson, born on August 26, 1999, is a Major League Baseball first baseman and third baseman for the Detroit Tigers.
Torkelson was selected first overall by the Tigers in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. Torkelson attended Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, California, where he excelled in baseball, football, and basketball.
He hit.430 in high school baseball, with 11 home runs and 99 RBI (RBIs). He is committed to play collegiate baseball for Arizona State University’s Sun Devils.
The following month, he was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game. In fifty games with Erie, he batted.263 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs.
On August 15, he was promoted to the Toledo Mud Hens of the Triple-A East, where he hit.238/.350/.481 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs in 40 games. After concluding his Triple-A season, he joined the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League.
Torkelson was added to the Tigers’ Opening Day roster on April 2, 2022. On April 12, he got his first major league hit, a double against Boston Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill. On April 13, he hit his first major league home run off Red Sox pitcher Austin Davis.
