For the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, Tarell Basham plays defensive end in professional football. He is 1.93 m tall and 118 kg in weight. He played football at Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount, Virginia, and during his time there he recorded 82 tackles and 16 sacks. He spent a year at the military post-graduate institution Hargrave Military Academy after graduating from high school before deciding to attend Ohio University.

From 2013 to 2016, he participated in NCAA football with the Ohio Bobcats. As a senior in 2016, he set a school record with 11.5 sacks while also earning MAC Defensive Player of the Year with 50 tackles, 16 for losses, two breakups, two forced fumbles, and a recovery.

He finished his college career with 158 tackles, 41.5 tackles for a loss, 29.5 sacks, 6 breakups, 5 forced fumbles, and 1 recovered fumble. He took part in 51 games while attending Ohio University, starting 37 of them, and he aided the Bobcats in their victories in three bowl games and the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship. The Indianapolis Colts made Basham their third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

In October 2018, he was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. During the 16th week of the 2019 season, he caught a pass and recorded an interception. In this contest, he made his first NFL career interception. In March 2021, Basham signed a two-year contract and committed to the Dallas Cowboys.
