In September 2017, he was added to the New England Patriots’ practice squad, but in October, he was released.

In November 2017, he signed up for the Houston Texans practice squad, then in April 2018, the Carolina Panthers claimed him off waivers. In December 2020, Heinicke joined the Washington Commanders’ practice squad. In the 2022 season opener for the Commanders against the Green Bay Packers, he threw for 200 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
