He played college baseball at Gonzaga University. Jones was taken by the Houston Astros in the 19th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. 2020 was the year he made his MLB debut.

During his time at Kentwood High School in Covington, Washington, Jones was a basketball and baseball player, among other sports.



He led his high school baseball team to the 4A state championship in 2012, his senior year. After failing to make the MLB draft in 2012, he enrolled at Gonzaga University, where he was a member of the baseball team.

In his first year at Gonzaga, Jones threw 17 innings and had an earned run average of 5.29. He also had a.233 batting average in 28 games that year.

During the 2014 season, he had four wins and an earned run average of 4.71 in 14 appearances. He also had a.211 batting average with one home run in 29 games played.

His junior year in 2015 was the year he decided to focus solely on his hitting and first base skills. It took 44 games to reach the All-WCC First Team with a batting average of.358, five homers, and 30 runs batted in.

The Cubs picked him in the 35th round of the 2015 MLB draft, but he declined to sign with them until after the season ended.

He played summer collegiate baseball with the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League the year before.

After playing in 56 games for the Panthers as a senior in 2016, with an average of.332/.391/.509, two home runs and 36 RBIs, he earned a berth in the All-WCC.
