During his final three seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he was selected as an All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) player. The New Orleans Saints selected him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Armstead and the Saints agreed to a four-year, $2.86 million contract in May 2013 that included a $617,436 signing bonus. He started his first season as Charles Brown’s backup left tackle.

He participated in his first regular-season game against the Arizona Cardinals in September 2013. Armstead and the Saints reached a five-year, $65 million contract deal in May 2016. A $38 million guarantee and a $11 million signing bonus are part of the agreement. On November 28, 2020, the team placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and he was activated on December 9 of that same year. Armstead and the Miami Dolphins agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract on March 22, 2022. Of that amount, $43.37 million was guaranteed.
