Morstead was born on March 8, 1986. In the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Morstead was selected by the New Orleans Saints to join their roster.

He attended Southern Methodist University, where he participated in collegiate football (SMU). Morstead was born in Houston, Texas, and received his high school education in Pearland.



As a senior, Morstead was selected to the second team of All-District and was honoured as the Most Valuable Player on the Special Teams for Brazoria County.
