He formerly played for the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball. Kemp and the Astros won the World Series in 2017.

Kemp attended Centennial High School in Franklin, Tennessee, and graduated with honors. He was a member of the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team while attending Vanderbilt University.



Kemp was selected Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SEC in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 2011. On the first Vanderbilt baseball team to reach the College World Series, he was a crucial contributor.

He played collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Cotuit Kettleers in 2012. In 2013, he was selected All-American and SEC Baseball Player of the Year.

Kemp was drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Astros. Kemp began the 2015 season with the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League’s Class AA.

He was promoted to the Fresno Grizzlies of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League in the middle of the season and played in the 2015 All-Star Futures Game.

Kemp was traded to the Oakland Athletics for minor league first baseman Alfonso Rivas on January 13, 2020.

Kemp hit.247/.363/.301 in 49 games for the Athletics in 2020, with no home runs and four RBI. In 131 games in 2021, he hit.279/.382/.418 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs.
