His attendance at Deerfield-Windsor School was followed by a transfer to Westover Comprehensive High School. He began attending Georgia Military College, where for two seasons he played collegiate football for the Bulldogs.

He was recruited by several NCAA Division I schools after showcasing his abilities at the junior college level, where he was named to the second team of the NJCAA All-Americans in 2012. He ultimately decided to continue his academic career at the University of Florida, signing a National Letter of Intent. In May 2013, he started playing collegiate football at the University of Florida for the Florida Gators football team.

In the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Brown was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in May. To the New England Patriots in April 2018, he was traded. He committed to the Oakland Raiders in March 2019 to a four-year, $66 million contract that included $36.75 million in guaranteed money. To the New England Patriots he was traded once more in March 2021.
