To begin the 2016 season, the Nationals assigned Gott to the Syracuse Chiefs of the Class AAA International League.

On June 6, he was placed on the seven-day disabled list with elbow inflammation, and he didn’t play again until July 25, when he was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Nationals of the rookie-level Gulf Coast League for a rehab assignment.

Gott took the loss in his sole appearance for the Gulf Coast League Nationals, pitching two innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out two batters.

He reported to the Auburn Doubledays of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League on July 27 to resume his rehab assignment, and he made one appearance for them, giving up an earned run and striking out two batters in two innings of work.

On August 1, Gott was reactivated to play for Syracuse. Gott made 33 appearances for Syracuse in 2016, pitching 39+13 innings with a 3–3 record and a 4.35 ERA, striking out 31 batters while walking 13 and converting one save in three chances.

On September 2, the Nationals called Gott up after major-league rosters were increased to 40 men. Gott had a 1.50 ERA in nine appearances for Washington, striking out six and walking three batters in six innings.

Syracuse was Gott’s first stop in 2017. On June 12, when the Nationals needed bullpen reinforcements, he was promoted to the majors.

On June 13, he won his first win with the Nationals, but the next day, he was the team’s “sacrificial lamb” in a 13–2 defeat to the Atlanta Braves, pitching 52 pitches over 2+2/3 innings, striking out two hitters but allowing five runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks before being relieved.

Following the game, Washington reassigned Gott to Syracuse.
