Conklin sat out his rookie season with the Chippewas to put on weight because his weight was below average for the tight end position. He won a backup position in 2015 after putting on 25 pounds throughout the winter and catching six passes for 95 yards.

Conklin did well at the 2018 NFL Combine, placing second among tight ends in the vertical, fourth in the broad jump, fifth in the three-cone drill, and ninth in the 40-yard sprint.
