Tyler, although born in the USA is of German descent. He was a student at Solon High School, where he football as both offensive and defensive line. Just before he graduated from high school, he was selected to play in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Game. After his high school education and football career, he chose to attend the University of Iowa to play college football.
In 2018, he enrolled at the University of Iowa where he played for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from 2018 until 2021. He began his college career at Iowa playing the position of a defensive lineman. Before the 2019 football season began, he switched to the position of center. That season, he was a starter in all 13 games.
The following season in 2020, he again started the games and was named an All-American as well as a finalist for the Rimington Trophy. During the 2021 season, he was honored again as he was named the Rimington–Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year and won the Rimington Trophy while being named to a unanimous All-American. The Baltimore Ravens drafted him in the first round in the 25th overall selection of the 2022 NFL Draft.
