Just before receiving his high school diploma, he was selected to play in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Game. He made the decision to enroll at the University of Iowa after completing high school and playing football.

He began attending the University of Iowa in 2018 and played football there for the Iowa Hawkeyes from that year through 2021. At Iowa, he started his college career as a defensive tackle. Prior to the 2019 football season, he switched to center. Throughout the campaign, he started each of the 13 games.



The following year, in 2020, he once again started games, and he was also named an All-American and a finalist for the Rimington Trophy. When he was named the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2021, won the Rimington Trophy, and was chosen as a unanimity All-American, he garnered notoriety once more. The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
