Tyler played high school baseball at Chatfield Senior High School in Littleton, Colorado where he had his formal education. When he was undrafted out of high school, he got enrolled at Garden City Community College located in Garden City, Kansas.

He played college baseball for the Garden City for just two seasons and got transferred to Austin Peay State University where he played college baseball for the Governors till he graduated. After graduation, the San Francisco Giants selected him in the 10th round of the 312th overall selection of the 2013 MLB draft.

Tyler agreed to play for the Giants and signed with them for a signing bonus of $7,500. He then started his professional career that season playing for the Arizona League Giants and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. He also played for both the Augusta GreenJackets and the San Jose Giants during the 2014 baseball season.

The Giants promoted him to the major leagues in August 2019. He made his MLB debut that night when the Giants played with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
