Taylor was selected in the second round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Torrance High School in Torrance, California. He had enrolled with California State University, Fullerton, to play collegiate baseball, but instead signed with the Brewers.

Taylor debuted professionally with the Helena Brewers that year, as well as the Arizona League Brewers. He batted.387/.434/.667 with two home runs in 75 at-bats across 18 games. In 2013, he was a member of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In 485 at-bats, he hit.274/.338/.400 in 122 games.
