Smith made his major league debut in 2022 and plays as a pitcher for the team wearing jersey # 56. He was born on June 8, 1995, in McCalla, Alabama in the United States.

Smith finished his high school education at McAdory High School in McCalla, Alabama. During Wallace State Community College, where he spent two years, he started playing baseball.

The Cleveland Indians picked him in the 23rd round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He transferred to the University of Mississippi and played college baseball for the Ole Miss Rebels after deciding not to sign with Cleveland.

The Miami Marlins drafted Smith in the eleventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft, and Smith eventually signed with the Marlins. Smith was exchanged by the Marlins for Jess Tinoco by the Rockies on August 13, 2020.
