For Hinds Community College, he received a scholarship. During his first season at Hinds in 2009, he made 22 tackles and one interception but was dismissed from the squad following the fifth game of the year. His stats as a sophomore included 43 tackles, three interceptions, and 12 pass breakups. He began his football career with the West Alabama Tigers in 2012 after enrolling at the University of West Alabama. Physical education was his area of study there.

Butler signed a $3 million, three-year contract with the New England Patriots in May 2014. With the Tennessee Titans, he agreed to a five-year, $61 million deal in March 2018 that included $30 million in guaranteed money. His one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals was inked in March 2021.
