The Pittsburgh Pirates welcomed right-hander Beau Sulser from Triple-A Indianapolis to their exhausted pitching staff.

Before the Pirates’ rain-delayed 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, manager Derek Shelton observed, “He can throw in many roles.” “If we have to, he can start.”

In that hybrid role, he can pitch. He can pitch at different lengths, which offers us more versatility.”

Anthony Alford was designated for assignment to make room on Pittsburgh’s 40- and 28-man rosters. After missing 10 days due to a right wrist strain, Alford was activated from the injured list on Friday.

The move reduces Pittsburgh’s active roster to three outfielders, but Diego Castillo and Cole Tucker can both play in the outfield.

Castillo made his debut against the Cubs in the series finale.

In Saturday’s 21-0 loss to Chicago, Shelton had Castillo pitch the eighth inning. In the second game of the four-game series, he employed five relievers on Thursday night and four relievers on Friday night.

In August 2020, Pittsburgh grabbed Alford off waivers, a third-round pick by Toronto in the 2012 amateur draft.

Sulser learned he was coming to the majors when Triple-A Indianapolis manager Miguel Perez called a team meeting before he was due to start Saturday against Columbus.

He batted .233 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 49 games with the Pirates last year.
